Having suffered two miserable seasons without any success, we decided to
throw the ball around and enjoy our rugby. Naturally we suffered some
defeats, as against Dunsmore 48-4, but we found we were enjoying the
game again.
At Leicester we played Alderman Newton's, who had a formidable pack and
a record to go with it, and although we lost 16-0 it was the turning
point in our season. From that game on, the team worked wonders: Lee and
Miller became a very good half-back pair; the Gardners became strong
men; our midget front row of Pearce, Badcock and Boyce became a
redoubtable trio; Jones, Capell and Tomalin became experts at back row
play; the unlikely Nicklin added power to our loose play, and Dickens
and Peck began to run the ball in all directions.
Finally, Northampton Grammar School fell foul to our mood, when we ran
them off their feet in the Cup semi-final. The final itself, against
Cherry Orchard, was an anti-climax, but we did win. In the meantime, we
had, surprisingly, won the league as well, so for all the hard work we
reaped just reward.
I would like to pay tribute to Currey, Spokes, Swann (that tackle),
Newman (that try!) and Turner who never reached the heights but were
necessary cogs in a very well oiled machine.
