60-year old governess pony trap was presented to the Princess Marina
Hospital, Upton, by Trinity Grammar School, Northampton, at the school
yesterday.
"We approach the hospital during the autumn term
and asked them to choose a piece of equipment they would not have been
able to get through normal channels" explained Mr. B. S. Howard,
the headmaster.
"A trap was found after some research and restored by Mr. H. Burt,
a Pattishall farmer who is interested in the craft".
Pupils and staff raised funds of £400 - double the
original target - by organising a series of events including a table
tennis marathon, dances, jumble sales, raffles and a sponsored walk.
"I was a little distressed that we might have
been asking for too much" said Mr. J. W. George, secretary of the
Princess Marina Hospital, receiving the trap, "But I underestimated
your powers of persuasion!" he said.
Its Value
 "The
trap will be drawn by two National Coal Board ponies already owned by
the hospital and it will be of therapeutic value, not only for the more
active children but also for those who are less mobile," said Mr.
George.
"You have made a splendid effort and I'm proud to
accept the trap on behalf of the hospital."
Sister Joyce Harris, Mr. A. Haynes, senior nursing officer and Mr. M.
Kelly, ward charge nurse, also represented the staff of the Princess
Marina Hospital.
Gillian Newton, head girl of Trinity Grammar School,
said the school had enjoyed raising the money and she hoped that the
trap would bring as much enjoyment to the children. |
